Envejecimiento demográfico y necesidad de desarrollar las competencias profesionales en enfermería geriátrica

Resumen

Introducción: abordar el envejecimiento demográfico y la necesidad de desarrollar las competencias profesionales en enfermería geriátrica implica un saber hacer frente a una tarea específica. Esta competencia supone conocimientos, saberes que emergen en la interacción que se establece entre el individuo y la tarea y que no siempre están de antemano.
Objetivo: reflexionar sobre el envejecimiento demográfico y la necesidad de desarrollar las competencias en enfermería geriátrica.
Material y Métodos: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica en el primer trimestre del 2013, que incluyó diversos libros de textos, artículos científicos y páginas web; además se realizaron consultas a expertos para obtener criterios relacionados con el propósito del mismo.
Desarrollo: el número de personas mayores aumenta exponencialmente en coyunturas socioeconómicas complejas e inciertas y las intervenciones oportunas basadas en competencias profesionales en enfermería geriátrica tendrán no solo el conjunto de los conocimientos apropiados (saber) y las habilidades y destrezas (saber hacer) sino la capacidad para responder a situaciones, y problemas en un mundo que envejece, implica el componente actitudinal y valorativo (saber ser) que permitirán potenciar las intervenciones oportunas a este grupo etareo con características propias y prevenir que se convierta en un factor de crisis para la estructura socio sanitaria.
Conclusiones: el desarrollo de competencias especificas de enfermería geriátrica coadyuvará junto a otros profesionales que brindan atención al adulto mayor a garantizar la calidad y la excelencia en la atención, permitirá potenciar el desarrollo social y prevenir que se convierta en un factor de crisis para la estructura sanitaria y de la seguridad social no solo de Cuba, también de las Américas en un  mundo que envejece.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: to study demographic aging and the necessities to develop professional capabilities in Geriatric Nursing involve the knowledge of what to do for facing a specific task. This competence supposes knowledge to come into establishing interaction between task and people that don´t be present previously always.
Objective: to make an interpretation about demographic aging and the necessity to develop capabilities in Geriatric Nursing.
Material and Methods: literature about demographic aging up to April 2013 was analyzed. The sources were books, articles and web sites related to the subject. Besides, Cuban experts in the subject were consulted.
Development: the amount of old people is increasing exponentially and it is happening in a complex socioeconomically situation where the precise interventions based in professional capabilities in Geriatric Nursing should be effective not only in the appropriate knowledge (to know) and in the ability and practice (to know what to do) but also in the capability to answer the problems in this world that is aging very fast. This capability integrates the components attitudinal and qualitative (to know how to be) which would allow us to promote in time interventions in the group of old persons, with original characteristics, and to prevent that these become a factor for a crisis in socio sanitary structure.
Conclusions: the development of specific competence in geriatric nursing joined to other professionals attending the elder will help to assure the excellence and quality of the attention allowing increasing the social development and preventing that becomes in a crisis factor to the sanitary structure and social security both in Cuba and America in an aging world.
