Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

ARTICLES AND SECTIONS

5 types of articles are accepted: original research, review articles, clinical case presentation, historical articles, portrait articles and editorials.
Articles will be inserted in different journal sections: Biomedical Basic Science, Clinical Science, Epidemiological Science, Surgical Sciences, Social Sciences, Educational Sciences, Technological Sciences and Letter to Editors.

METHODOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS COMMON TO ALL TYPES OF ARTICLES

  • Articles should be unpublished; if it has been published author (s) have obligation of communicate.
  • Full name of author´s institution (s).
  • Title. In case of use names of institutions don´t use acronym or abbreviation, should be the official and updated names in English or Spanish.
  • Authors.  The full name of all author (s) should appear , avoid the use of initials ´names. Each author (s) should declare their scientific degree, professional titles, academicals degree and teaching/research categories. Will be accepted as author (s) those who fulfill with the recommended criterion by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).   • Authors should provide primary data register used if are asked for reviewers.
  • The statement allowing to be mentioned of each people acknowledged appearing  in the issue of “Acknowledgement”.
  • Bibliography References. The journal take in described normative in Manuscripts recommendations send to biomedical journals (Vancouver´s normative) http://bvs.sld.cu/revistas/recursos/vancouver 2012.pdf.
  • Tables and Graphics should be presented in jpg format. To pictures (300 dpi). Graphs and diagrams should be presented in editable format and with a good quality.
  • Ethics considerations. Research presented must have fulfill all the ethics statements according to the type of study both in human and animals (Helsinki´s statement) http://bvs.sld.cu/revistas/recursos/helsinki.pdf.
  • Articles should not have fragments of others published previously or in publishing process in journal or other type of support without the proper authorization, in case that belong to the author (s) are consider like self-reference.
  • Any ethic infringement related to the document will be solved using the established protocols of the International Scientific Published Committee (ISPC) http://publicationethics.org/files/All Flowcharts Spanish 0.pdf
  • Clinical trials. The clinical trials should be presented its corresponding register number obtained by Clinical Trials Register. This number must be verifiable and have to appear the source and be adjusted to the assessment parameters expressing in the International Guide CONSORT http://bvs.sld.cu/revistas/recursos/CONSORT.pdf
  • Writing. The use   acronym or abbreviation should not be as many to avoid a fluid reading and comprehension of the article. The meaning of each acronym or symbols should be described. Clarity and coherence in the writing and syntaxes. Perfect orthography is required to be published the article.
  •   Presentation form of manuscripts. The articles have to be presented in electronic format in WORD text, letter Arial 12 and spaced 1.5 cm.
  • Authors rights. The journal is available in open access without restrictions fulfilling to the international policy about open access to information. The contents here expressed may be used without commercial aim when the referring primary sources are always expressed. 
  • Interest conflicts.  Author (s) has/have obligatory declare if there is/are or not interest conflicts in relation to the submitted research.


SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION AND INSTRUCTIONS OF EACH SECTION ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF ARTICLE

 I. Results of Original Research
The extension is not more than 4500 words, including bibliography references.
Each article should be accompanied of a letter expressing the contribution in the study by each author.
For instance:
Pedro González Pérez: Performed the statistical process.
María Rodríguez Morales: Selected the study sample.
Alberto Pérez Gómez. Creates the measuring instrument.

Title
The Title should correspond to the topic of the article. Must be concise, clear and informative. It should not have more than 15 words and should be written in English and Spanish. It should not include acronyms or abbreviations and if they are used institutions names must be officials and updated.
Abstract
Abstract is structured by sections following the structure: Introduction, Objective (s), Material and Methods, Results, Discussions and Conclusions.
Abstract has a word limit of 250 words and has to give an adequate idea about the research. Abstract has to be written in third person in English and Spanish.
Key words
Key words should be precise and representative of document semantic contents both to main contents and secondary. Should appear between six to ten key words and it is recommended the use the Health Science descriptors, http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepage.htm
Introduction
Brief, clear and appropriated background has to be presented. Scientific problem justification has to be presented and describe the objective (s) clearly.
Material and Methods

The types of study or research have to be described as well as periods and place. Population or studies groups have to be described as well as exclusion/inclusion criterias and the sample selection justify if it is required.
Variable analyzed should be described with clarity and to expose with clarity the information´s collection methods, processing and analysis methods used. The statistical method has to be appropriated and should fulfill the principle of reproduction by other researchers. Particular ethics aspects have to be declared.
Results
Results should be according to the research´s objective (s) using the appropriate statistics (when ever are required) Graphs and Tables stand out the most relevant results without repeat the information each others. It is allow a maximum of 5 Tables and 3 pictures or statistic graphs.
Discussion
The discussion is a critical review of results taking in consideration the published paper of the own author(s) or other researchers both in the national and international areas. It has to explain the results reached and their limitations as well as to describe the applicability and generalization.
Conclusions
Conclusions cannot be a repetition of results; conclusions must have a generalization that corresponding with the objective (s) of the study and have to be in correspondence with the results and discussion.
Bibliography References
References have to include 50% of paper published in the last five years representing in remarkable both the national and international scientific literature about the topic.
Tables
Table´s title should correspond with its content. Information showed should justify its existence. Don´t repeat information set in text.
Pictures
Only the necessaries. Foot notes must correspond adequately with the picture. A maximum of 3 and not more than 500 kb each one is required.
Other aspects
The presentation of your proposal of publication should have adequate quality in relation to writing and orthography and fulfill the ethics principles of the research.

II.  Revision Articles
Extension cannot exceed the 5000 words, including bibliography references.
No more than 3 authors are accepted.

Title

Introduction
Brief, clear and appropriated background has to be presented with its bibliography justify. It should be a remarked and pertinent topic. The scientific problem orienting the review must be based. Describe clearly the objective (s) of the paper.
Material and Methods
Criterion and justification of the consultant’s selected sources. Searching methods used and period of time take in consideration in the review.
Development
Exposition according to the paper´s objective(s). Graphs and Tables remarking the main aspect without information repetition. Results interpretation showed in the consulted literature. Contrast differences and coincidences of the analyzed results. To criticized the results according to the state of art published by both the own authors and other researchers. To describe the applicability and generalization of the results. To include new aspect to take in consideration (if it is necessary).
To show and remark limitations and contribution of the revision.
Conclusions
Conclusions should be according to the objetive (s) of the study. To expose clear, concise and pertinent conclusions.
Bibliography references
The 70% of references should have been published during the last 5 years and represent both the national and international literature about the research topic.
Other aspects
The presentation of your proposal of publication should have adequate quality in relation to writing and orthography and fulfill the ethics principles of the research.

III. Clinical Case Presentation
Extension cannot exceed the 3000 words, including bibliography references.
No more than 3 authors are accepted.

Title

Title corresponds with the subject of the article, be concise, compressible and informative. Extension cannot exceed 15 words and has been write in English and Spanish. Should not include acronym or abbreviation if is used institution´s name must have official names and update.
Abstract
Abstract is structured by section following the structure: Introduction, Objective (s) of the presentation clinic case, Presentation of the clinical  case, Conclusion, offering an adequate idea about the research subject. To show reasons to be presented the case. To summarize appropriately the clinical case. Words limit are 250 words. Abstract has to be writing in third person in English and Spanish.
Key words
Key words should be precise and representative of document semantic contents both to main contents and secondary. Should appear between six to ten key words and it is recommended the use the Health Science descriptors, http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepage.htm
Introduction
To show a brief, clear and appropriated background. To describe the objective and reasons to the case be presented.
Clinical case presentation
To describe correctly the antecedents (family inheritance, personal, pathology and non pathology, surgical and obstetrics, etc.) relating to the case. To indicate the beginning, evolution and current state of procedure. Summarize the main clinical finding, lab and radiology remarking those that make the clinical case peculiar. To indicate the treatment used and to show the case´s evolution.  
Discussion
To analyze and compare the main finding with other reported. To indicate the pathology and physiopathology and its meaning. To describe the difficulties to find the diagnosis and/or treatment of the presented case. To discuss the differential diagnosis. To analyze theories and hypothesis about the implications of the findings.    
Conclusions
Conclusions should be clear and justify the case´s presentation.
Bibliography references
References must be cited using the Vancouver style according to the instruction for authors. Will be cited those studies considered relevant about the research topic both national and international, and the 40% of references should have been published during the last 5 years.
Pictures
Are accepted the maximum of three images. Images should have a good quality and be necessaries and pertinent. Graphs and charts should have a good quality also. Data that present cannot repeat information indicated in the text.
To protect the identity of patient and to respect the ethics principles. To declare the sources where the figures and/or pictures were taken.
The description of figures should be adequate. Foot notes correspond with the figures. Describe the meaning of abbreviation or symbols used in figures.

IV. Historical
Extension cannot exceed the 5000 words, without including bibliography references.
No more than 3 authors are accepted.

Title

Abstract has to indicate  the objective clearly. To describe the methodology used. To indicate the main contribution and conclusions. The maximum words admitted are 250 and have to be writing both in Spanish and English.

Introduction
To show a brief, clear and appropriated background. To precise the scope, importance, originality and pertinent of the research topic. To describe with clarity the objetive (s) of the paper.
Material and Methods
To mention the primary and secondary informational sources. To make triangulation of sources. Criterion and justification of the consulted articles selection.
Development
Should have a correct organization and presentation of the research topic. To divide by sections facilitating the theme´s development and comprehension. It is supported in primary and/or secondary sources. To include a critical analysis of the consulted sources.  
Conclusions
Conclusions should be according to the objetive (s) of the study. To expose clear, concise and pertinent conclusions.
Bibliography references
Are enough and pertinent according to the treated theme. Should be cited according to Vancouver style.
Figures and Tables
The amount of tables and figures should not be excessive, pertinent only. Data presented do not repeat information cited on the text. Information presented on tables should justify its existence. Figures should be the necessaries and pertinent only, and they have the required quality. In case of use abbreviation or special symbols, it is necessary to describe its meaning. Include credits in the figures.

 V. Editorials
The editorial express the position and criterion related to a topic to treat by the editorial committee of the journal, or scientific circumstantial situation. It will be ordered to determined personalities. Its extension should not exceed the 1000 words, it may include bibliography references.

Semblance

It presents information about the life and work of outstanding professors and/or researchers of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, highlighting their main contributions to the teaching-learning process and research.

Historical

Articles dedicated to highlight relevant issues related to the history of Medical Sciences.

Biomedical Basic Sciences

This section includes studies about particular aspects related to the structures, functioning and organ behaviors as well as their disorders. It also includes experimental research using animal models, cell cultures, in vitro and in vivo analysis of cell or molecular components, description of new structures or biological processes using diverse technologies, aspects about clinical assays used to assess the behavior of molecules and cells, etc.

Clinical and pathological sciences

This section includes studies using the clinical method in patients, new algorithms for diagnosis and treatment, uncommon or interesting case reports, description of new diseases or clinical pictures which had not been reported before in the country or worldwide, particular responses to treatment - allergies, side effects or adverse reactions not described in clinical assays - microbial resistance to antibiotics, nosocomial infections, new treatments in clinical trials in which the signs and symptoms of the diseases are reported, etc. The section also includes macroscopic and microscopic descriptions of tissues and organs in several diseases, descriptions of functional and structural changes underlying the disease and allowing the etiological diagnosis.  It also presents different reports of analytical hematology, immunology and diagnostic microbiology, biochemistry or clinical chemistry, cytogenetic and diagnostic molecular genetics.

Surgical Sciences

This section includes reports of new surgical techniques or modifications to traditional or recent techniques described above, algorithms for the diagnosis, decisions taken to perform surgical interventions and post-surgical follow-up of patients in any branch of surgery, interesting cases that had not been reported previously, latest news and procedures in noninvasive surgery, and organ transplant as a surgical procedure. It also includes anesthesiology reports with the same former characteristics.

NOTE: In case of the medical and surgical specialties, the inclusion would depend on the profile of the article, both from a clinical or surgical point of view.

Epidemiological and Salubrity Sciences

Epidemiological

The section includes studies about distribution, frequency, determinants, relations, predictions and control of factors related to the health of the population and diseases not previously described or those that have experienced some changes in their behavior, research about risk factors for diseases, tendencies of a disease, strategies for their control or prevention, and evaluation of intervention programs for the control and prevention of diseases.  Pharmacological surveillance and immune-epidemiology studies are also included.

Health Sciences

It includes follow-up studies; evaluation and analysis of health condition in communities; public health surveillance in communities, provinces or the country; strategies and interventions for health promotion and the results of its intervention; community participation in the health care; new health policies for the planning and management of public health. It also includes the development of human resources and training in public health, intervention strategies to guarantee and improve the quality of health services both individually and collectively and the reduction of the impact of disasters and emergencies in the health sector.

 

Educational Sciences

This section is related to the teaching-learning process in all of its stages (pedagogical activity itself, particular didactics in different subjects, teaching methods and resources, study techniques, teaching styles, instructive and educative aspects in the student-teacher relationship, educational management, the role of the medical university in society, evaluation of competence and performance (academic and professional performance and competence). It also includes articles related to educational work with medical students, students´ scientific work and extracurricular activities and some other activities related to the teaching process in higher medical education such as its organization, planning, development and implementation, evaluation, quality, reached results, and their relation to other activities.

Social Sciences

This section includes studies about the material and spiritual life of social groups and human beings in society. It shows results of different studies in the field of individual and social psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, demography, human ecology, politics, economy, human geography and health geography and linguistics, among others. The section also includes studies about environment and health.

Bibliometric and Scientometric studies

Science in general and the medical sciences in particular have demonstrated an increasing interest on measuring research outcomes, which is shown in several publications and elements of these studies that can be used to evaluate the quality of processes and other added values.  It also includes conventional metrics of research outcomes shown in different publications with different levels of aggregation from an article, an author, a unit, an institution or a country taken from traditional and novel indicators of altimetric studies or metric alternatives and their potential users (from students and professionals to decision-makers of health and community policies) and their responsible use.

Technological Sciences

This section publishes research works related to the development, introduction and evaluation of new technologies in all branches of the health sciences, the development of new products or health services, their evaluation and social introduction, novel technological processes applicable to the human health from the laboratory phase to the different graded research steps, new materials for the science of implantology, and substitution of biological structures among others. Orthopedic equipment, new devices for the diagnostic and treatment of diseases, surgical instruments to both conventional and non-invasive surgery are also presented.

Nephrology update

The section publishes articles related to new advances in Nephrology.

Letter to the Editor

It shows criteria of authors or readers about other articles published in our magazine.
