Golden proportion in smile aesthetic evaluation
Abstract
Introduction: It has been recognized the determinant role of smile in facial attractiveness, hence the importance to count with a more effective diagnostic criteria in the evaluation of its alterations. The golden proportion is a tool suggested at present for aesthetic diagnosis of smile.
Objective: To identify in the literature the lineal relation of the smile that contains golden proportion.
Material and Methods: A literature review was performed consulting the database systems: MEDLINE, Hinary, Scopus and Scielo. 69 articles of 37 magazines and two books related with the subject of study were consulted. 22 scientific articles and a book were selected considering the updating and relevance of the content information. The information was processed and structured considering historical antecedents of the subject, dental and facial relations that have intended for the smile aesthetic analysis based on the golden proportion and were summarized in couples to facilitate its understanding. Results: Were found at least thirteen relationships which described the presence of the golden proportion which were summarized and graphically represented. Its use has been argued for different authors as a criterion of diagnosis related with aesthetic and functional affectations.
Conclusions: Nowadays, approximated thirteen smile linear relationships have been suggested which keep golden ratio, because of its ease to use and the possibility of an individual treatment; is being defined as a reliable variable in the diagnostic evaluation of orthodontic patients.
