Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected health services, including mental health services. However, there is little information on Bolivia.

Objective: To describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the provision of Mental Health Services (MHS) in Bolivia.

Material and Methods: A qualitative exploratory approach of phenomenological type was conducted through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with six key officials of the main MHS. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed in Atlas.ti for its analysis by codes and categories.

Results: The demand for care in the MHS was modified and the care had little inter-institutional coordination. Adaptations in the infrastructure, biosecurity measures, and health personnel were indicated. Opportunities for strengthening teamwork, equipment and infrastructure improvements, and mental health valorization were identified.

Conclusions: The pandemic significantly affected the provision of MHS. It is important to delve into the potential long-term impact of the pandemic on health and the organization of services that make it possible to strengthen mental health programs.
