Integrative model for the biopsychosocial assessment in pediatric oncology

Abstract

Introduction: Building an evaluation model that derives from oncology pediatric patients' perspective is essential for effectively meeting their needs. Current standards of pediatric psychosocial-oncology care are mainly determined by medical providers and the child's relatives. There is a recognized need to develop a holistic model that is driven by patients themselves, with a central focus on utilizing art as a tool to facilitate the expression of their inner world.

Objective: To propose an integrative model for the biopsychosocial assessment of oncology pediatric patients.

Material and Methods:  Qualitative grounded theory design based on the analysis of observations, interviews, and art projects. The initial study included twenty children aged 6-17 years diagnosed with cancer from the Hospital de Especialidades Pediátricas in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Results: An integrative model for the biopsychosocial assessment consisting of six dimensions—physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, family, and social—represented as concentric and interacting circles, is proposed. This model depicts factors that promote well-being and health, as well as obstacles that impede them in pediatric oncology.

Conclusions: This model establishes a foundational framework for cancer centers to delineate the essential components of comprehensive biopsychosocial care from pediatric patients’ perspective.

Olimpia Petzold-Rodriguez es psicóloga clínica graduada con honores Cum Laude en la Universidad Rafael Urdaneta (URU), Venezuela. Tiene una Maestría en Psicología Clínica de la URU, y una Maestría en Neurociencia, obtenida con un desempeño sobresaliente en la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, España. Olimpia es actualmente candidata doctoral asignada a la Unidad de Investigación Psicosomática y Psico-Oncológica de la Université Libre de Bruxelles, Bélgica. Se especializó en Arte Terapia en la Haute Ecole Libre de Bruxelles. Sus actividades de investigación se centran en el estudio de la evaluación y el tratamiento de factores psicológicos en pacientes con cáncer, mediante el uso de arte terapia. Durante más de 18 años, se desempeñó como profesora en el Departamento de Psico-socio-antropología de la Universidad del Zulia (LUZ) en Maracaibo, Venezuela. Ocupó el cargo de jefe del Departamento de Psico-socio-antropología y profesora de enlace en el Consejo Académico de la Escuela de Trabajo Social. Actualmente es profesora adjunta del departamento de psicología del Lone Star College, Texas. Así mismo, es conferencista y dirige talleres sobre salud emocional, psico-oncología, mindfulness, manejo del estrés, arte y salud, inteligencia cultural y habilidades del pensamiento, tanto en los Estados Unidos, como a nivel internacional desde hace 14 años. Es directora de la división Mindfulness, Salud y Bienestar de CLICK Institute, un tanque de pensamiento basado en Washington. Es la vicepresidenta de la Sociedad Interamericana de Psicología para Estados Unidos y Canadá (2023-2025). En el 2019, recibió el Premio de Investigación Doctoral en Psicología, otorgado por la Sociedad Interamericana de Psicología, por su investigación, la cual se centra en la evaluación y el tratamiento de factores psicológicos en pacientes jóvenes con cáncer. Trabaja probono en el CANOPY, Cancer Survivorship Center en el Hospital Memorial Hermann, The Woodlands, Texas, donde dirige el grupo de bienestar en español y el coordina el programa HEART (Healing Art). Debido al éxito de estos dos programas fue reconocida con el premio Women of Distinction 2019 por el Condado de Montgomery, Texas y el reconocimiento “Excellence in Community Service” by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, USA, Nov, 2022.
