Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has generated significant repercussions on the mental health of the world's population. This study focuses on investigating the long-term psychological effects in recovered COVID-19 patients, especially in terms of anxiety and depression.

Objective: to describe the characteristics of convalescent patients from COVID-19 as well as the relationship between their levels of anxiety and depression.

Material and Methods: A study with a descriptive observational quantitative approach was carried out throughout the year 2023, in the city of Riobamba, Ecuador, with a sample of 164 convalescent patients from COVID-19. The Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used, and statistical analyzes were used to interpret the results. The variables were studied: sex; formative instruction; type of treatment; age; anxiety levels; and depression levels.

Results: It was observed that all people convalescent from COVID-19 included in the study presented symptoms of anxiety and depression, showing different levels. Moderate anxiety was the most prominent (37%), followed by mild anxiety (34%). Regarding depression, minimal and mild were the most common (37% and 36% respectively). There was no association between anxiety and depression levels in relation to sex or training instruction.

Conclusions: All convalescent COVID-19 patients included in the study group presented some level of depression and anxiety, regardless of their age and educational level.
