Functional capacity and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Keywords:
Rheumatoid arthritis; quality of life; functional capacityAbstract
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic and inflammatory autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, although its impact can extend to other systems and organs. In Ecuador, although epidemiological information remains limited, Rheumatology services are registering a sustained increase in patients with advanced functional impairment, chronic pain, and significant impacts on their quality of life. This situation highlights the need to strengthen comprehensive care, rehabilitation, and clinical follow-up strategies in this population.
Objective: To analyze the functional capacity and quality of life in patients with RA who attended the Rheumatology Service of the “Carlos Andrade Marín” Hospital.
Material and Method: An analytical, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the period September 2023-February 2024, using a non-probabilistic sample which was composed of 73 patients who were previously diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. A survey was used to collect information.
Results: Most of the patients evaluated with RA have a mild disability and a good quality of life. Certain factors such as pain, nervous tension, and time with the disease significantly affect both functional capacity and quality of life.
Conclusions: The study emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive care that addresses multiple aspects that affect patients with RA, including the control of physical symptoms, functional rehabilitation, and the strengthening of social and emotional resources.
