Abstract

Introduction: Sports injuries are common in physical activity and sports, with impacts that go beyond the individual sphere, also affecting society in general. Sports practice carries an inherent risk of injuries that can have significant effects on people's health and on the effectiveness of sports and fitness programs.

Objective: To evaluate sports injuries in students of the Physical Activity and Sports Pedagogy degree at the National University of Chimborazo.

Material and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was carried out during the period from March to August 2023 at the National University of Chimborazo. The study universe consisted of all students enrolled in the Physical Activity and Sports Pedagogy degree at the National University of Chimborazo, Ecuador.

Results: Statistical analysis indicated a significant correlation between competition level and injury incidence (contingency coefficient=0.21, p=0.02), but not between age, marital status, or ethnic self-identification and injury. Although a moderate correlation was observed between injury type and the circumstance in which it occurred, this was not statistically significant (X²=29.4, p=0.2).

Conclusions: Sports injuries in this population are common and vary by discipline and competition level, highlighting the need for specific injury prevention and management programs to improve student safety and performance.
