Introduction: Dental restoration with composite resin has as fundamental premises the preparation of the oral cavity, the compliance with the appropriate adhesive protocol and the precise insertion of the material.
Objective: To evaluate and compare the surface roughness of a resin after having been polished with different pastes and thus provide an answer to the quality of the surface finish.
Material and Methods: An experimental, analytical, cross-sectional research was carried out with a quantitative approach, developed through an in vitro process in Riobamba, Ecuador, during the month of May 2024. The study population consisted of 60 resin samples that were randomly selected and distributed in 15 samples for each of the groups (Control group: 15 resin samples (no diamond paste was applied and polishing with 3M discs); Experimental group 1: 15 samples for the Diamond Polish Mint (ULTRADENT) diamond paste; Experimental group 2: 15 samples for the Diamond Gloss (TDV) diamond paste; Experimental group 3: 15 samples for the Diamond excel (FGM) diamond paste).
Results: Significant differences were identified when statistically comparing the control group with the experimental groups. However, no significant differences were observed in the results between the 3 experimental groups, since the surface roughness values were similar between them.
Conclusions:All experimental groups had lower surface roughness of a resin after being polished with the different pastes, compared to the group to which no diamond paste was applied and polished with 3M discs, with the diamond paste Diamond Polish Mint (ULTRADENT) being the one with the highest polishing capacity.
