Abstract

Introduction: The influence of technological innovation on society demands new ways of conceiving the teaching-learning process.

Objective: To describe digital and mobile learning, as well as applications for mobile devices in the field of information and communication technologies in current medical education.

Material and Methods: A bibliographic review on information and communication technologies in medical education was carried out during November 2021. Impact journals from the Web of Science and SciELO Cuba were chosen as sources of information. Descriptors such as “Information Technology” and “Medical Education” and their counterparts in Spanish were used. Full text articles published in Spanish and English during the last 5 years were also included.

Development: Digital learning is the act of teaching and learning through digital technologies. Mobile learning consists of mobile devices, applications and Internet services. The success or failure of an educational software depends on how the requirements to be fulfilled have been understood. The global health crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic has extended to all aspects of human life, including education, and there have been several challenges and solutions in this area.

Conclusions: Information and Communications Technologies are based on electronics. This encourages the development of telecommunication, computer and audiovisual devices useful in teaching, for example, in distance education. The advantages of mobile devices and applications promote the efficiency and flexibility of learning in the field of medical education. Its benefits have been used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
