Abstract

Introduction: Cataract and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness in Cuba and the world. Phacotrabeculectomy allows both diseases to be solved in a single surgical act.

Objective: To evaluate visual recovery, intraocular pressure control and quality of life related to visual function after phacotrabeculectomy.

Material and Methods: Pre-experimental study in 93 eyes (93 patients) with primary open-angle glaucoma and cataract. Standard two-way phacotrabeculectomy surgery was performed. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, the number of ocular hypotensive medications, and the severity of glaucomatous damage were analyzed; also, the VFQ-25 questionnaire was applied to evaluate quality of life during the preoperative period and six months after surgery.

Results: Visual acuity increased significantly postoperatively. Intraocular pressure decreased, with a mean variation from 25,5 mmHg to 16,6 mmHg; and the number of ocular hypotensive eye drops was reduced. Postoperatively, the mean VFQ-25 score increased to 95,9 points, with positive changes for all dimensions. The severity of glaucomatous damage was directly correlated with best-corrected visual acuity and quality of life relative to visual function.

Conclusions: Visual recovery, control of intraocular pressure and reduction in the number of eye drops demonstrate that phacotrabeculectomy is a viable option to improve quality of life related to visual function; and it is independent of the severity of the glaucomatous damage.
