Introduction: It is important to highlight the lack of information on specific interventions in the home setting for the adequate care of older adults with tracheostomy.
Objective: The objective of this bibliographic review is to provide the most current evidence on nursing interventions provided to informal caregivers for the proper management of tracheostomy in the home setting.
Material and Methods: A search was conducted in five electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Medline, SciELO, and Cuiden, with an additional search in Google Scholar. Articles published from 2014 to 2024 were selected. The PrismaCR analysis guidelines were used for the development of this systematic review.
Results: Eleven original research articles were included, in which three main themes were identified: interventions for caregivers on the management of home tracheostomy, interventions for patients that promoted self-care on the management of home tracheostomy, and interventions for both patients and caregivers on the management of home tracheostomy.
Conclusions: The reviewed interventions had positive impacts on increasing the level of knowledge and skills in patients and caregivers. They also improved the management of home tracheostomy, reducing levels of anxiety and burden in both caregivers and patients, as well as enhancing self-efficacy on the management of tracheostomy.
